Chapter 7

Tom slammed into the house, his eyes furious. “What do you want?” Charlie demanded, tossing the papers he’d been reviewing onto the countertop.

“Sam made steak and potatoes for dinner tonight.” He stated as if those words explained Tom’s anger. But Charlie just stared back at the man as his soup started boiling. “Is there a problem?”

Tom rubbed a hand over his face, trying to calm down. This was his boss, and normally, he was terrified of Charlie. He was a good boss, and his ranch was amazingly successful. There wasn’t anyone who cared more about the land and his people than this man. But Charlie was mad at Sam, Sam was looking like death warmed over, with dark circles under her eyes, and Tom suspected that she spent most of her free time crying. That tiny woman didn’t deserve Charlie’s anger, and if no one was going to tell the big boss, then Tom was the man for the job!

“The salad was missing,” he stated, then waited.

Charlie was furious and clueless about what his foreman was trying to convey. “First of all, her name is Samantha. And if you want a salad, tell the woman to make a salad!”

Tom couldn’t believe that Charlie didn’t get it. “Sam,” he emphasized, disobeying a direct order for the first time in his employ, “usually makes something healthy for her men. She makes sure that they eat salads or vegetables along with all of her meals. Until last night, she wouldn’t allow potatoes on the menu.” Tom’s explanation had started off with a bit more respect, but by the end of his statement, he was yelling at his boss, too furious to keep his voice down.

Charlie was having a hard time not exploding. He wanted Samantha here, in his house. He hated the idea that she was down in the kitchen cooking for other men. It had never been a problem before. He’d just head into town for a meal at the local diner or have one of the men bring him a plate while he did paperwork. It had been a good enough arrangement until yesterday when he’d discovered that his lover was also his employee. He couldn’t allow that. But would she listen to reason and stop working for him? No!

The only other solution was to stop their affair. He could not be having an affair with an employee! Not happening! It violated his personal ethics, not to mention several laws.

Now his foreman was yelling at him, talking about potatoes and salad? What the hell?!

“And this is significant…why?” he prompted, trying very hard not to fire Tom. He was a good worker, but Charlie’s anger was at a boiling point. Samantha should be here! In his bed! Damn her, she was just being stubborn!

Tom couldn’t believe Charlie didn’t understand. It just proved that Charlie had no clue about Sam!

“Because she’s mad! Sam’s food is a reflection of her mood! The three days you went out of town two months ago, we were eating anything grey that popped into her mind.
